I didn't invent this method (Triggera didn't either) - another DIYer posted some pics of his a few years ago and I thought it was a cool idea. When I had to redo my kick I thought I'd give it a try and it works really well.
The beaters are by Sonor and they have exactly the right diameter for a 27 mm piezo; YMMV with beaters by other brands. I removed the felt, which leaves a cavity, drilled a hole at the bottom edge for the wires to pass through and stuck in a piezo with rubber under the outer rim. Then I added a couple of layers of 5 mm medium-density poron on top and that's it. I thought the piezo might easily get damaged but they've been going for over a year now and still work fine. I use RCAs in all my pads so they each have their own RCA jack going to a TRS->RCA cable.
