Pointers for external quick connect on 56 model

Postby pettersundlof » Thu Dec 05, 2019 4:42 pm

Hi! I've been struggling with making a working external connection on my 56 megadrum to my midi marimba (45 keys+2 ground, so it'd be 45 signals).
I've been trying to use the IDC connectors, and bridging them has been a nightmare. Attached an image, where you can see the bridging from the megadrum pcb to a male connector intended for pcb soldering --> female 40 and 20 pin cables going to my midi marimba.

The midi marimba has 12+12+12+11 sockets on it, so it's easily changeable to another form factor.

What would you recommend as a good solution for easy connecting, that has easy solderability (from pcb board's idc 40 and 20 to external chassi connectable input) and a good way to connect around 1.5-2m from megadrum to marimba?

Good idea ;)
I have 2x 25 pin D connectors on the MD housing and connect it to a breakout box with 24 stereo TRS connectors for the trigger pads.
For the cables I used 2 parallel printer cables with ca. 40 cm length in order to prevent noise. I don’t know if 1,5-2 meter cable length is ok too.

I can post a picture if you want.

Funny thing is that I used this concept because I planned to build a midi marimba...
Can you post some pictures from your midi marimba?
Kind regards, Rob.

With a 1,5m IDC flat cable I didn't have any noise issues... it's just simple voltage? :)

Here's a pic of my sort of finished, very rough... thing.

This is how I did it with 2x 25p D connectors.

What material do you use for the keys?
